I Hate Perfume

From our friends over at WorkBook Project Lab’s Radar series comes the newest episode about New York based perfumer Christopher Brosius, from CB I Hate Perfume. Brosius is someone I’ve been following for awhile, since he left Demeter and started his own shop in 2004. I love this video: Watch the episode by clicking here.

15 inches in Detroit

I ‘inchvested’, about a year ago, in Jerry Paffendorf‘s Loveland project in Detroit. I just saw a mockup of my 15 square inches (i’m guesstimating this property at 3 inches wide by 5 inches long), and now I realize I am feeling compelled to DO something with these inches. But I need ideas.

I am thus calling out for your input! What should I do with 15 inches in Detroit?

Please answer in the comments below. The best idea (eg the one that’s the raddest, while still being the most executable) will get credit and be decreed – by me – co-inchvestor of the micro-plot.

Here is an image of the plot:

Which is part of a bigger plot, dubbed Plymouth.

And which is here, in real space:

More about Loveland:

“Buy real land in Detroit for $1 a square inch and join a network of inchvestors in the new 50,000 square inch Hello World microhood. This season we’re building a virtual Bridge To Everywhere and supporting other cool projects in Detroit.”

Troika’s Kinetic Sculptures

Eva Rucki and Sebastian Noel’s London based Troika is an art and design practice that most recently made the news with their kinetic* palindrome sculpture- installed in July for the Victoria and Albert Museum in Kensington. Watch the video here.

In 2008, they made Cloud for the British Airlines Luxury Lounges in Heathrow Terminal 5. Just under 16.5 feet long, Cloud is covered with about four and a half thousand flip-dots that audibly change from black to silver – guided by a computer program –  to bring the surface of the sculpture to life.

* Kinetic sculptures are defined as 3-dimensional art** objects that have parts that move or that are in motion. C’est tout.

** Dont even ask me to define art.

‘Helvetica’, ‘Objectified’… Now ‘Urbanized’.

Chalk it up to filmmaker Gary Hustwit to keep up his job as the chronicler par extaordinaire of society’s current passions in design and design discourse.

His deep look into a typeface resulted in his 2007 documentary Helvetica. In the age of the iPhone, he turned to industrial and object design (and in so doing produced a nice commentary on the fetishization of design objects) in Objectified. Now he’s tackling urban design- or as he puts it ‘the design of cities’. This, to my view, must be the most complex of his subjects thus far, and I am really excited to see how Urbanized turns out.

From his site:

“The third documentary in this trilogy is about the design of cities.Urbanized looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design, featuring some of the world’s foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders, and thinkers. Over half the world’s population now lives in an urban area, and 75% will call a city home by 2050. But while some cities are experiencing explosive growth, others are shrinking. The challenges of balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns. Yet much of the dialogue on these issues is disconnected from the public domain.

Who is allowed to shape our cities, and how do they do it? Unlike many other fields of design, cities aren’t created by any one specialist or expert. There are many contributors to urban change, including ordinary citizens who can have a great impact improving the cities in which they live. By exploring a diverse range of urban design projects around the world, Urbanized will frame a global discussion on the future of cities.

Urbanized is currently in production and will premiere in 2011. We’ll be releasing more details about the cities, projects, and people featured in the film in the next few months, along with a proper site. Once again I’ve teamed up with cinematographer Luke Geissbuhler, and I hope you’ll follow along as we complete the film and finish this third exploration into the role of design in our lives.”
